Wholesale Banking prominently featured in 2010 rankings

CIBC’s wholesale banking business has ranked at or near the top in several key Canadian rankings for 2010. Highlights include the following:

  • #1 overall equity underwriter (FP Infomart)
  • #1 underwriter of Canadian IPOs (FP Infomart)
  • #1 retail structured products underwriter by volume, market share and deal count for the 7th straight year (Bloomberg)
  • #1 M&A advisor by dollar value for transactions involving Canadian targets (Thomson Reuters)

  • #1 equity trading firm in TSX listed securities across all markets

The 2010 Global Custodian Prime Brokerage Survey recognizes CIBC Prime Brokerage in all categories

In the 2010 Global Custodian Prime Brokerage Survey, CIBC was commended in all categories, including being ranked #1 in multi-prime brokerage among Canadian Primes, and also top-5 globally. CIBC also received a Best in Class rating for 9 of the 11 service categories, including technology, reputation, client service, operations and margining.

The results also showed that CIBC’s creditworthiness and consequent stability in financing are part of the attraction for new clients. CIBC’s staff were described as, “Flawless … 100% helpful and always ready to act.” One client described CIBC as the “most forward-looking prime broker in Canada.”

These are impressive rankings for CIBC, especially given that this is the first year CIBC’s prime brokerage team was included in Global Custodian’s ranking of 24 Prime Brokers.



CIBC analysts recognized by Starmine and The Globe and Mail

In 2010 Starmine and The Globe and Mail handed out awards for analysts in the stockpicking and earnings estimation categories. The team at CIBC took home nine honours, which was 4th amongst brokers. CIBC analysts ranked higher than any other broker with six #1 placings.

CIBC-led Canada Housing Trust wins Canadian Dollar Deal of the Year

Euromoney Magazine has named the $8 billion Canada Housing Trust No. 1 (CHT) bond deal, which CIBC led in June 2009, as one of the transactions that shaped global financial markets in 2009.

As the Lead Manager on the deal, CIBC advised CHT on the timing, structure, marketing and execution of the transaction. The $8 billion, 5-year offering has a 3.15% coupon and matures June 15, 2014. It was the largest single-tranche Canadian dollar bond offering in 2009.



CIBC ranks #1 by both volume and value in 2009 on the TSX

In 2009, electronic trading helped solidify CIBC’s position as a leading equity trader on the TSX. CIBC’s wholesale banking business ranked number one by both volume and value.



CIBC receives #1 ranking in Global Survey

In the annual ranking of Prime Brokers in Global Custodian’s 2009 Prime Brokerage Survey, CIBC achieved the highest response rate and scored exceptionally well in key categories, including a number one ranking in value.



CIBC Recognized at 2009 Deal Makers Awards

At the 2009 Deal Makers Awards, CIBC was acknowledged in the category of Foreign Inbound Award for our role in advising Saskferco, a nitrogen fertilizer plant jointly owned by the Mosaic Company and Investment Saskatchewan Inc., on its $1.6 billion sale to Yara International ASA.



CIBC ‘s first covered bond offering receives recognition

CIBC’s first covered bond offering, completed in 2008 was named Securitization Deal of the Year by International Finance Law Review. It was recognized as the most innovative and creative of all of the securitization deals done across the Americas.



CIBC ranked top M&A firm

Thomson Reuters once again ranked CIBC as the top M&A firm in Canada in 2008, according to their annual league tables. CIBC advised on more deals worth more in value than any other M&A advisor.



CIBC highlighted as stand-out Canadian bank-owned dealer in algorithms.

In the Forefactor 2008 Buy-Side survey – Perspectives on Algorithm and Electronic Trading in Canada, CIBC ranked as the top Canadian bank-owned dealer of algorithmic trading and number two Canadian bank-owned dealer in direct market access.



CIBC has been named "Investment Bank of the Year - North America" for its continued leadership in M&A.

The award by ACQ, a U.K.-based acquisition finance magazine, recognizes CIBC's wholesale banking business for having the greatest impact on the M&A industry in North America in 2008. The honour for CIBC is the result of an ACQ poll of its editors and nearly 2,300 industry participants.

ACQ Magazine covers deal news and market moves for corporate finance professionals. It has a circulation of 17,500 and is distributed in the U.K., Europe and North America.



CIBC a leading forecaster of the U.S. economy

Bloomberg Markets has named Avery Shenfeld, senior economist at CIBC World Markets Inc., one of the top forecasters of the U.S. economy.

The magazine ranked Avery fifth overall - and the top Canadian economist - in forecasting the key drivers of the U.S. economy between 2006 and 2008. His accuracy rating was 64.6 per cent - just 1.2 percentage points behind top spot.

To identify the best economists, Bloomberg Markets analyzed forecasts between 2006 and 2008 on four key U.S. indicators: the consumer price index, the federal funds target rate, gross domestic product and unemployment. Given the volatility of the economy this year, the analysis gave extra weight to each economist's forecasts for 2008.

CIBC three-for-three at inaugural M&A Awards

At the Financial Times/Mergermarket inaugural M&A Awards - Americas, CIBC's wholesale banking arm was named the winner of the following awards:

  • Financial Advisor of the Year - Canada
  • Mid Market Financial Advisor of the Year - Canada
  • M&A Deal of the Year Canada - Teck Cominco Ltd.

The M&A Awards Americas recognizes corporate, private equity, banking and legal M&A expertise and excellence in the Americas. The Awards combine M&A transaction data with independent expert opinions to identify the winners in each category.



CIBC Named Investment Bank of the Year

CIBC has been named Investment Bank of the Year for its strength in M&A.

The award, by U.K.-based ACQ Finance Magazine, recognizes CIBC as the top M&A dealmaker among Canadian and U.S. investment banks.

ACQ Magazine staff and contributors chose CIBC as the firm they felt stood out from the crowd over the last year based on deals reported in the magazine.

CIBC's leading advisory team took the top spot in the 2007 National Post rankings for the most Private Equity deal activity in Canada.



CIBC analyst named top US stock picker

Perry Caicco of CIBC World Markets Inc., Equities Research has been named among the world’s top analysts in the 2007 Financial Times/Starmine rankings, published May 16, 2008.

Mr. Caicco’s #1 analyst ranking is based on the success of his individual stock picks in the U.S. Food and Staples Retailing market last year.

Earlier this month, Mr. Caicco was named one of the top retail analysts in Canada for the accuracy of his earnings estimates.

The Equities Research team at CIBC World Markets Inc. has taken top spot in the 2007 Financial Post/StarMine ranking of brokerages and analysts. The firm received 19 Top Analyst awards based on the success of individual stock picks and the accuracy of earnings estimates made by 14 analysts. The awards span 17 coverage areas, include three #1 rankings and put CIBC in first place in the ranking of top 10 brokerage houses in Canada.

CIBC wins two Canadian Dealmakers of the Year Awards

CIBC's wholesale banking business was recognized as a Canadian dealmaker of the year for its key role as exclusive financial advisor to Fortis on its $3.7 billion acquisition of Terasen Inc., the Canadian natural gas distribution arm of Kinder Morgan Inc.

The transaction was recognized as Canada's best deal of the year with Fortis, and as a result, CIBC and the two law firms engaged in the deal were chosen as the country's top deal team in 2007. The transaction was also selected as the top energy, power and utilities deal of the year.

Senior Economists Avery Shenfeld and Meny Grauman were named February's "Forecaster of the Month" in Dow Jones' MarketWatch new rankings of the best economists. The award recognizes economists who do the best job of forecasting the top economic news that moves U.S. markets.

The Banker's Top Deals of the Year 2007 ranked the US$10.3 billion sale of Placer Dome to Barrick Gold as Canada's top deal. CIBC advised Placer Dome in a successful deal that created the world's largest gold mining company.
